Scott Nash and Nancy Gibson-Nash founded the nonprofit Illustration Institute to increase awareness of and appreciation for illustration as an art form. In 2016, they launched their first exhibit at Portland Public Library that featured the work of 18 contemporary professional illustrators. The following year, they started a summer artist residency on Peaks Island. They’ve continued to host exhibitions and events ever since.

Tim Soley, president and CEO of East Brown Cow, said the real estate company has developed its own art collection that is displayed in their properties. (His father, Portland landlord Joe Soley, owned works by the painter and illustrator N.C. Wyeth.)
